LIFESTYLE | Giving Full-Time Blogging A Go

Banyan Leeds Pancakes Jaywing PR

Hello lovelies!

A couple of weeks ago I was kindly invited to a Leeds blogger brunch with Jaywing PR. A bunch of bloggers were popped into a room filled with SEO and PR experts, as you can imagine, lots of bloggy related chats occurred, as well as squeals over avo and toast. All the gossip about what makes a good PR relationship, and also what makes a bad one. I learnt a lot about SEO, it kind of made me feel like I literally knew NOTHING, other than what the two letters 'DA' meant - there is so much more to it, but it's okay, I am a total whizz now!

The wonderfully fabulous Hannah Gale (totes blog goals) was there to talk all things 'full-time blogging' as well as monetising your blog. I left this brunch feeling just SO INSPIRED, like I could take over the (blogging) world, one berry at a time. That could have been the pancakes chilling in my tummy though, cheers Banyan*, they were delicious.

I know a lot of bloggers that would absolutely love for their little space on the internet to become their full-time baby, and other bloggers I know absolutely hate this idea. I'm rather indifferent about the idea. I really do love blogging, and I love Very Berry Cosmo HEAPS, but I like working in an office surrounded by people, I get lonely. I also really worry about money, I need that CONSTANT financial security, I need to know how much I am earning each month otherwise I know I would curl up into a ball of panic.

Giving Full Time Blogging A Go

But that's the thing. I'm not earning money anyway, because I don't have a job. I feel like I have applied to hundreds and hundreds, and I know it is still early days, heck I only graduated last week, but getting a job after Uni is really flipping hard, much much harder than I expected. I hate not doing anything, I get fidgety and feel totally lazy all the time at the moment. This is why I have decided that I am going to put my ALL into making Very Berry Cosmo into something that I am really proud of. Working full-time hours on it each week, rather than ohhhhh I haven't posted in like 3 weeks, I should probably whip one out now. I would like to get 4 or 5 blog posts out each week and also a YouTube video, that is my goal anyway!

Money, Money, Money, it often surprises people that I haven't ever actually received a single penny for any of my blog content before, I have only attended events or accepted gifted items. That's because for some reason accepting money scares me, it adds pressure... 'what if they don't like the blog post I have written' 'what happens if they aren't legit and scam me' basically I am a worrier, but after talking to Hannah at the Jaywing PR event, there are lots of different ways that you can earn money on your blog, and they aren't all scary!

Right now I 10000000000% couldn't pick to work on my blog over a full-time job, yano, since I don't earn a single penny from it, but because I don't have a job at all at the moment, what do I have to lose? I'M GOING FOR IT, AND I AM EXCITED.

Spot the difference?

I've been wanting to re-design and rejig Very Berry Cosmo for quite a while now, and now that I have finally finished my degree, it just felt like the right time. So I hope you like it. I worked really hard developing my hand-written typography during my final University project and it felt wrong to be using a font that I just downloaded off the internet, when I could be using my own! My shiny new template is created by the amazing Pipdig, and I absolutely love it.

I am looking to begin advertising from August onwards, so if you are interested in becoming one of my special strawbs do keep a look out on Twitter - I am looking to give away the first months advertising slots for free! There is something about a brand new blog design that gives you that extra KICK OF MOTIVATION! Just what I need now that you strawbs are going to be hearing A LOT more from me, are you excited? I hope you are.

Wish me luck!

  1. This is such an inspiring post Kayleigh! I'd love to be able to run my blog full-time and hopefully one day that'll be able to happen. Like you, I need constant financial security and I'd be too panicky without a stable income! I'd love to know more about what you learnt there and I hope it works out for you :)

  3. This is such an inspiring post Kayleigh, it's always difficult where you see your blog going! :) I'd love to do it fulltime and I've only just accepted my second paid blog post and the whole thing still terrifies me. Putting your all into your blog whilst looking for a graduate job is a great way of giving yourself motivation and also potential employers will see that too!

  5. Good luck! I blogged full time when I was trying to get a job. It was something to do, and I made a bit of pocket money. But I couldn't pick full time blogging over a job yet either. I need the company of others and a secure income. I think it's great that you're going to use this time to focus on the blog and wish you all the best with it! Love the new design too :) x www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

  6. Good luck! I really hope this works out for you, but I definitely agree that having a full time job with regular income makes life much simpler. I've been self-employed since I started working, and there are times when the stress really does get too much, yet I don't think I'd be happy doing anything else.

  8. I love this post, it would be amazing to do my blog full time as a career but while I'm waiting to start my Masters in September I treat my blog like my job and work on it everyday. Good luck with the blog and the job hunt!

  9. As a blogger (from Leeds too! :D) I can totally relate to this post. I actually set my blog up when I was temping, when my working pattern was erratic. It was great when I was working part time, as I had a balance of both office life, and the extra time to dedicate to look at blogging professionally.

I'm now working full time and don't have nearly enough time to blog as regularly as I used to. Luckily, all the techy and design stuff is pretty much all done. I think it's great to dedicate your time to blogging now while you still have the time. It's defo a good distraction until you're working and hey, you never know where it might lead :).

  10. How exciting!! I've been really enjoying putting as much effort as I can into my blog since graduating. I'm lucky enough to have a job lined up so this full time blogging will be coming to an end very soon, but it's definitely given me a big surge of motivation that will hopefully keep me going even when the blog has to come second to my career. Also - loving the updated header and theme, I love a good blog refresh and yours is looking fabulous!

  14. Congratulations on graduating! I kind of have mixed feelings about you full time blogging because I LOVE reading your posts, but you're so uber talented that I kind of feel like the world is missing out if someone doesn't hire you sharpish! Hopefully your blog will be the gateway to something brilliant either way!
